The base is 2.6.30-rc8, with git6 patch, Acer fan module patch, coretemp patch for the new Intel Atom (of course this new build has full Acer Aspire One support). Also I have re-included the webcam modules, as in the previous release I totally forgot about them.

In general this build should work perfectly on Acer laptops, Acer Aspire One netbook, IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads and HP laptops. I didn’t tested the kernel on HP laptop, but it was tested already on Acer Aspire One and Lenovo T61. One issue which you may find in this kernel is that it might not work usplash on some Ubuntu releases. If you have some issue when using this kernel please drop me a comment, it is possible that some parts where left out even if in the tests everything worked fine.

Instructions:

First download the kernel image and headers:

wget http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/2.6.30-flyleaf/linux-image-2.6.30-flyleaf_1_i386.deb
wget http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/2.6.30-flyleaf/linux-headers-2.6.30-flyleaf_1_i386.deb

Now we need to install them:

sudo dpkg – i linux-image-2.6.30-flyleaf_1_i386.deb linux-headers-2.6.30-flyleaf_1_i386.deb

when asked what to do with this new kernel image please select “Install new kernel image“.

NOTE: This is intended for Debian/Ubuntu systems, as its a deb package.

Crap: Oracle buys Sun

Anything

General

News

Talk

buy-off

ibm

mysql

openoffice

opensolaris

oracle

sun
<guid

I don’t really have issues with Oracle, but they are not really open source or not as much as I would wish, also I can’t really understand why Oracle bought Sun… I mean Sun are more into OS, some hardware and a lot of Java, unlike Oracle which is more, well actually all database.

Anyway, don’t think this will be something that bad, but I do have the impression that Oracle did this to be bigger then SAP, they are fighting for quite some time now and this buy off will make Oracle more stronger than most companies out there, that includes also SAP and even IBM.

At one point my only concern is MySQL, OpenOffice and OpenSolaris, how will they go on, will they remain free and so on. I do hope that Oracle wont end-up to behave or to be something like Microsoft.

Lets hope for the best… BTW: the buy off was for 7.4 billion USD, if anyone is interested <img

The weather here is just nuts, very cold, no sun and windy as hell, but on the technological front we have some interesting news. One of the most important one would be, the IBM & Sun deal which might work out after all. A lot of people say that this might not have any impact in the IT world, but I beg to differ, lets see what happens. In other news Microsoft have finally launched Internet Explorer 8, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft website as we speak. To be honest I wouldn’t use it, I would and will stick with Firefox and I don’t think IE8 or other Microsoft products will get better any time soon, when it comes to virtually anything, stability, speed, security and so on. When it comes to Apple, they have launched the new iPhone 3.0 OS, quite obvious for iPhones (I really don’t like iPhone that much).

In rest I would say the week was quite calm, no new stories or important events. I’m preparing right now a post related to Xen and OpenVZ virtualization, which got me to a conclusion over this week, one of them sucks badly, but you need to be tuned to this blog until I write that post

Oh, yes, I forgot. Yesterday I got the opportunity to watch Milk, a movie which was nominated at Oscars and as I know, it actually won a couple of them. The movie reveals the story of a gay man, Harvey Milk, who struggles with a racist and bigot America in the 70′s. Now, from my side, the movie is great, represents one of the first gay movements in US and their fight for freedom and rights. I would say its worth watching it, at least for some history lesson.

Have a lovely weekend and stay tuned for more…
