A couple of days ago I have created a new plugin, TweeU, based on Tweetly Updater. This plugin updates your Twitter account with the new posts from your blog when they are published and creates a short URL link to the post using buh.bz. The difference between the original plugin, Tweetly Updater and TweeU is that this new plugin uses buh.bz URL shortening services instead of bit.ly.

To be honest I don’t like that much bit.ly and because of that I created buh.bz, which uses PHurl code with some modification, of course. Now the cool part is that this new plugin of mine is also included on wordpress.org at plugins. So anyone who uses WordPress and wants TweeU, can easily install TweeU from their WordPress admin console.

Another cool part with this plugin and buh.bz service is that you do not need an account to create a short URL. It’s a simple URL shortening service which, well only makes short URLs. The idea of using for everything an account, like Twitter, bit.ly and so on, it’s not quite the easy thing to manage, especially now a days most of us have tons of accounts on different web sites and I’m sure we don’t need an account also on a URL shortening page/web site too.

If you wanna download this plugin, the please go to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tweeu/ or to the official web site http://www.robertalks.com/tweeu/.

Please use it and rate the plugin on wordpress.org.

Today, the kernel development team has release the stable version of the kernel 2.6.32. This version should include a lot of bug fixes, improvements and added functionality and drivers. Like usual, when there is a kernel release, I also do a kernel package release, which in this case is called “final“, as its a major and stable release of a new kernel tree, 2 6.32. I’m not gonna talk too much about the this kernel release, but I will talk about the package which includes this kernel. To find what actually has changed in this kernel version, I would recommend all of you to read the change log from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.32.

One major, or important patch to this kernel build is ureadahead (über-readahead), which also is included in Ubuntu 9.10 kernel and OS. If you didn’t know, Ubuntu has moved away from sreadahead in favor of ureadahead, but the patch was only for kernel 2.6.31. Other important add-on’s are, acerhdf kernel module (0.5.20) for Acer Aspire One netbook fan control, coretemp support for Intel Atom processor, but this time I haven’t patch it myself, as it is fixed within the kernel module and a custom kernel configuration for a much more responsive and stable system.

Also, Selinux and Apparmor are removed, plus a lot of hacking option from the kernel. This should make the kernel itself smaller, more responsive and faster, but my tests are limited to 2 laptops/desktops, so I will need you guys to test and play with this kernel build to see how is holding up.

To install this new kernel packages, you need to use dpkg and of course to download at least linux-image-2.6.32-final_1_i386.deb package from http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/2.6.32-final/ (US/CA) or http://mirror.visualserver.org/kernel/2.6.32-final/ (CZ) and if you are thinking of building you own kernel, maybe for a different Linux distribution or just because you want to, you can download the source code and kernel config file from http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/source/ (US/CA) or http://mirror.visualserver.org/kernel/source/ (CZ).

Update: The debian package were rebuild using an older version of libc6, which will allow users with older version of Ubuntu/Debian to use this kernel.

Update: I’ve build a new kernel 2.6.32 named final-union with unionfs file system support. Can be found in the same place and if you need or use unionfs that you should download the packages. If not, the just ignore this update.

The day has come for Karmic Koala to be released. Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” is here!

I’ve been waiting for this release for quite a while now. I’ve tested most releases since 8.04 and I had to stick to 8.04 due to the stability and functionality of it. Most of the new releases had issues and problems, from the Intel video driver issues to simple instability of the system for every day use.

Tried already the beta and RC version of Ubuntu 9.10 and until now I can only say nice things about it. Nice gnome changes, like removal of images in the buttons, speed up and more functionality. In plus this new release should also be faster and more stable compared to the previous releases.

This release comes with the latest kernel version 2.6.31, updates for all packages included in this release, Ubuntu One for backup, sharing of files, AppAmor new profiles and version, hal deprecation, new Intel driver architecture, moving from EXA to UXA video acceleration method and so on.

The changes are big and endless to write them here now. But if you are interested in this new release, go to the Ubuntu download page http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and take this new release for a spin, I really thing you will enjoy it.

As I wrote in my previous post, today I am launching the new kernel package for Debian/Ubuntu 2.6.31.5-firebird based on kernel version 2.6.31.5. This new package contains the latest kernel, acerhdf module for Acer Aspire One (version 0.5.19) and coretemp patched for Intel Atom processors. If you wanna read more about what this new kernel packs, please check out http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.31.5.

Usually, I do not release any kernel package based on kernel version 2.6.31.[0-9] as I had some bad experience with it, plus it didn’t function as I would wished, but after some tests with this new kernel version I end-up with the conclusion it needs to be released.

Because the installation of this packages is the same as any Debian/Ubuntu package, I wont explain it, but I can tell you all what you need to download and from where you can download this packages. First of all, you will need at least the linux-image-2.6.31.5-firebird_1_i386.deb package to be able to use this kernel and you can download it from http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/2.6.31.5-firebird/ and if you are thinking of building you own kernel, maybe for a different Linux distribution or just because you want to, you can download the source code and kernel config file from http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/source/.

To end this post, I will ask you again, like every time to test, check, play and use this packages and drop me a note for any issues or even just that it works.

Cheers you all!

As some of you may have notice, my blog have change in every way possible. There is a new theme, new logo, new server and web server setup. Now when it comes to the new setup, I am talking about lighttpd with php-cgi. I’ve been testing this option for a bit and seemed the right one to go with. Lighttpd seems to work quite fine and the speed it’s really good, but there are some issues, it’s quite complicated to configure lighttpd. I mean, the style of configuration is a bit odd, but in general if you worked some time with web servers, you will get it, anyway I did.

The new theme, again is also new and it’s called Mystique and seems a very good option at the moment. It uses jQuery, making the theme and in general the blog look and feel nicer. When it comes to the logo, you will notice a mix between “Robin’s logo” (Batman’s right hand) and a normal text, all done in Adobe Photoshop.

Because change was need it, not just for the looks, but also for the speed of the blog, the blog was moved to a more powerful server, which seems to have a bit of more kick in it and handles the requests faster and maybe even better.

The next logical move, would be to switch from the current MySQL server, which is 5.0.x to 5.1.x which suppose to be the production version and I also believe it would work better too. I’m not sure when I will move to the newer MySQL version, but today or tomorrow I will try to build it. This might mean the blog will be down until I will be able to upgrade also the database from the old version to the newer one.

Anywho, I hope that all of you, who do read this blog, or find useful thing in the blog, will find this new updates much more interesting and pleasant. Also today or tomorrow I will release the new kernel packages 2.6.31.5-firebird, which are based on kernel 2.6.31.5.

So tune in tomorrow and check and test the new kernel. Cheers!
