As usual, there is a new kernel release, 2.6.32.4 and with that a new kernel package release for Debian/Ubuntu, 2.6.32.4-shanghai. I think after so many release all of you are use to the same talk so this time I will keep it short. As it does include all the necessary modules and patches to work on netbooks, but also on laptops/desktops, I wont mention them anymore, but I will mention that you should check the ChangeLog from kernel.org to see whats new in this release.

So, please download this release, install it and see how it works. Should work quite nicely, as it was already tested and seems to be improved especially when it come to DRM and i915 drivers.

The method of installation is the same and you will need root access or sudo access, plus dpkg and the will to try it out. Download the packages from http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/2.6.32.4-shanghai/ (US/CA mirror) or from http://mirror.visualserver.org/kernel/2.6.32.4-shanghai/ (EU/CZ mirror) and remember that to use this kernel you will need at least linux-image-2.6.32.4-shanghai_2.6.32.4-1_i386.deb package.

A little help for beginners who wanna use this kernel. After you download the package use dpkg to install it, like this:

sudo dpkg -i –force-all linux-image-2.6.32.4-shanghai_2.6.32.4-1_i386.deb (you do the same with the rest of the packages)

For those of you who want or need to rebuild the kernel, you can download the source code with the config file from http://dl.robertalks.com/kernel/source/ (US/CA mirror) or http://mirror.visualserver.org/kernel/source/ (EU/CZ mirror).

Cheers and good luck, don’t forget to leave any comments in case of problems and issues.
