Acer Aspire One
A couple of days ago, I bought a brand new Acer Aspire One, the netbook thing. Now, I do not have real experience with this types of laptops (netbook), especially that they are based on Intel Atom and some of them, like the model that I got are using SSD type of disk (pretend SSD, I would call it). The model that I got its quite cheap and of course the specs are not so impressive.
It comes with an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz (N270), which seems to be dual-core or anyway Linux and Windows sees something similar to dual-core or dual processor. I got the model with 1Gb of memory, 8Gb of SSD disk + 8Gb of storage (which actually is a normal SD memory card). This model came with Windows XP pre-installed, but quite obviously I removed Windows and installed Ubuntu 8.10.
After the installation of Ubuntu, the laptop (netbook) didn’t perform as nice as I would have expected, but a small search on the net revealed a lot of web page which where explaining how to setup your Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu or other Linux distros. The total setup with the tuning took me about maximum 1 day and now I have to say it does work quite well. It’s still slow if I compare it to my girlfriends dual-core HP laptop or even to my Celeron based Acer Extensa. On the other hand, this small little thing its quite cool, I mean is so light and you could even put it in your pocket (if it would fit
). Its very light, very similar weight to a PDA, but normally more nicer as it has a fully functional keyboard, system and actually looks and behaves a lot like a normal desktop or laptop computer (well more or less if you taking the performance into consideration).
As my experience with this laptop (netbook) gets a bit better I wanna post a How-To setup an Acer Aspire One with Linux. Something which will include all the details need it to make the laptop (netbook) perform and behave properly, for a normal usage. This is gonna be a mix between what I know and also what I found on different wiki’s and web pages, so it will include everything, top to bottom.
Until then, I will play with my new toy and start sketching for the How-To.
Good day all!
