Crap: Oracle buys Sun
When I believed that everything is gonna work out between IBM and Sun, this falls into place, Oracle buys Sun, something that no one saw it coming. I don’t really have issues with Oracle, but they are not really open source or not as much as I would wish, also I can’t really understand why Oracle bought Sun… I mean Sun are more into OS, some hardware and a lot of Java, unlike Oracle which is more, well actually all database.
Anyway, don’t think this will be something that bad, but I do have the impression that Oracle did this to be bigger then SAP, they are fighting for quite some time now and this buy off will make Oracle more stronger than most companies out there, that includes also SAP and even IBM.
At one point my only concern is MySQL, OpenOffice and OpenSolaris, how will they go on, will they remain free and so on. I do hope that Oracle wont end-up to behave or to be something like Microsoft.
Lets hope for the best… BTW: the buy off was for 7.4 billion USD, if anyone is interested

Oracle buysing Sun keeps Solaris alive. Ignoring the argument around open vs closed source this is a good thing as Solaris is a very good, fast, optimised OS. Pair Orcacles Db offerrings with said iron and OS and you’ve got a good value proposition that at least gives an alternative to the IBM approach – and lets hope that Oracle keep alive the stance that Sun were taking with opensource offerings for free and those that wanted to pay for support could – this could be a good move for both companies and for DB’s as an appliance…..
Maybe you’re right on this, but still there is the issues with MySQL, Oracle is a database company and this puts MySQL or Sun in a weird position… I hope that MySQL Community Server wont die or better said MySQL Server in general wont be killed by Oracle, as at the moment it is a bit of a contest between the 2 database products. Oracle is more into enterprise database offering, which shouldn’t effect Oracle or MySQL position at all, but you never know what Oracle will do about it.
