Now a days on the net you can find hundreds to thousands of web hosting company which most of them offer the same thing, just with a different name or more or less a bit of a different configuration and hosting panel. I do not have any problems with most of this companies, everybody wants to make some money and have their own stuff and maybe opening a company like this can do the job. My problems comes when this hosting companies bullshit with their ads and impressive give-a-ways, which most of the times are not real or true.

One of this issue is Unlimited Disk Space, which by default is bullshit. First of all, physical disk is limited even if the technology is quite far away, but we really have limits and besides the physical limit there is the OS limitations when it comes to the file systems, there is no file system type that supports unlimited disk size. I know the most people wont ever need 1TB (terabytes) of disk space for their web site, because most people have a small blog, company web site or some web base mail service, which will never reach 1TB or more.

The other issue that I have with this lovely hosting companies, is Unlimited Site Bandwidth, which again by default is bullshit, not because its not possible, but because they actually don’t mean that. I have an account on one of this hosting companies and the product that I got, says Unlimited Site Bandwidth. It sounded really good and useful for me when I bought it, as I’m helping out some Linux project with hosting or download mirrors. So I started giving out some space for some of this Linux project. Usually this means that they need disk space and bandwidth so the users can download the ISO images which they’ve create. Everything worked fine and super dandy, but after about 3 months, one of this project launched a new release of their distro and people where really into it and started downloading the ISO images like crazy. When this started, of course they also started using the mirror which I have provided for the project and of course the bandwidth and even CPU was going up, but on the other hand I payed for this so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Wrong! It was a problem, actually was such a big problem that I got my account suspended even if I payed for it. I didn’t get this part at all, because when I got this account they said, which was very important for me, Unlimited Disk Space and Unlimited Site Bandwidth, but it wasn’t true at all. So the fix in my case was to remove the ISO images or just simple to not allow anymore the users to download those ISO images. I know that maybe for a while, the system and network got overloaded due to the downloads, but I do not believe it should be an issue, as you pay for what they where giving. When I got the account from the hosting company, I didn’t try to bargain with them so they will give me the hosting product with some discount or anything like that, then why should I suffer? I payed for their product as much as they asked with no complains and I only expected to be exactly like that.

I know I’m kind of asking to much, because this idea of advertising which hosting companies do is very similar to detergent advertising, the ad is really good, everything seems fine and dandy or even in some cases the product has super natural features, which makes you really wanna buy, until you actually buy it and you realize is the same shit like any other detergent, just has a different packing, is more expensive, has a different name and in most cases smells different.

As I really wanna share my experience with you guys, I wanna let you know which company was that, only to know, to don’t be surprised. In my case, I got the hosting product from Bluehost.com, but don’t be fooled, its not just them, I do belive its a lot of other companies doing the same shit.
